These handwoven baskets are woven by people from the Zulu tribe in the KwaZulu -Natal region of South Africa.The fiber used is from the indigenous illala palm tree and the colors are natural dyes obtained from local roots, berries, bark and earth.Each basket is unique and can take up to a month to complete a medium sized basket. Traditionally the lidded baskets are used to store liquids (usually millet beer) and the bowl shaped baskets are used to gather and carry grain.
Each basket comes with an informational tag explaining the symbolism of the designs as well as the name of the artist.
